Waterloo is a residential and commercial inner-city suburb located three kilometres south of Sydney's Central Business District. The suburb's primary neighbours are Redfern, Moore Park, Zetland and Alexandria. Due to its convenient location, the area has gradually experienced a process of gentrification since the early 2000s.
The suburb is named after the Battle of Waterloo - an Allied and Prussian military victory over Napoleon's French forces in 1815. In the 1820s Waterloo was one of Sydney's earliest industrial districts, with significant paper mills and flour mills established in the area. While traditionally a working-class suburb, Waterloo and its neighbouring districts have been the subject of a major urban renewal project in the last decade, with the Green Square precinct now well established.
Green Square is located in Waterloo's southern portion and features a train station on the relatively new Airport line. To the north of the suburb, swanky Danks Street is a popular lunch and dinner spot, with Sonomo Bakery always proving to be a crowd favourite. The heritage-listed AGM Glass Factory (built in 1938) is now a storage facility, but its historical facade still stands proudly at 851 South Dowling Street.
