Vaucluse is an affluent harbourside suburb located nine kilometres northeast of Sydney's Central Business District. Based on the South Head peninsula in the Eastern Suburbs, and enjoying both harbour and ocean waterfronts, Vaucluse's prestigious addresses and picturesque views make it one of Sydney's most coveted places to live.
Before British settlement, Vaucluse and its surrounds were inhabited by the Birrabirragal Aboriginal clan. Due to the suburb's elevated topography and close proximity to the Sydney Heads, signalling stations and lighthouses were erected in Vaucluse shortly after settlement to provide safe entry into Sydney Harbour. Residential use of the area developed from the early 19th century. Vaucluse House, a magnificent Gothic Revival estate, was constructed near present day Nielsen Park and completed in 1839. The house was named after the Fontaine de Vaucluse, a famous spring in the South of France.
The heritage-listed Vaucluse House still exists today and is open to the public as a museum on Wentworth Road. A series of stunning harbourside beaches are dotted throughout the suburb, with the most popular including Milk Beach, Shark Beach (at Nielsen Park) and Parsley Bay Beach. A small shopping village is located on New South Head Road's eastern bend, and cliff top ocean views can be enjoyed from Christison Park and Lighthouse Reserve, where Macquarie Lighthouse and the South Head Signal Station still proudly stand.
