Ultimo is an inner-city suburb located two kilometres southwest of Sydney's Central Business District. Home to the University of Technology Sydney and the Powerhouse Museum, Ultimo, along with neighbouring Chippendale, also partly contains the locality of Broadway.
Ultimo's name is eccentrically the product of the rum trade and a clerical error. Dr John Harris was granted an estate in the area in the early 19th century to thank him for aiding the government in curtailing the illegal trading of rum. He named the estate "Ultimo" after a clerical error in a legal case against him that had prevented him from being court-martialled. His offence was documented as "ultimo" (having occurred in the previous month) when it should have been listed as "instant" (having occurred in the same month). Once an industrial area, the suburb is now more residential and commercial in flavour.
The University of Technology Sydney is located on Broadway and was established in 1988. The Powerhouse Museum was moved to its current location in Ultimo in the same year. Despite recent government plans to move the museum's entire collection to a new site in Parramatta, community backlash has thankfully inhibited this, allowing the Powerhouse Museum to continue operating its Ultimo site, which includes its iconic Locomotive No. 1 exhibit. The Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre sits behind the museum at 458 Harris Street.
