Rushcutters Bay is a small harbourside suburb located three kilometres east of Sydney's Central Business District. The suburb is mostly residential, but also features a waterside park and oval. Rushcutters Bay Park, to the east of Rushcutters Creek is actually located in the suburb of Darling Point.
The area that constitutes Rushcutters Bay today was first known as 'Rush Cutting Bay' after British settlement. Early settlers cut the tall rushes in the local swampland to use for thatching houses. The 15,000 seat Sydney Stadium was built in Rushcutters Bay in 1908 and hosted boxing matches and concerts until it was demolished in 1970 to make way for the Eastern Suburbs Railway. The bay that the suburb shares with Darling Point was used for sailing events during the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Rushcutters Bay Tennis Centre is a pleasant place to play a few matches by the harbour, and a public stairway nearby provides direct pedestrian access to Elizabeth Bay. Across Rushcutters creek, Rushcutters Bay Park eventually meets the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, one of Australia's most prestigious yacht clubs, and the starting point of the annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race on Boxing Day. The Vibe Hotel on Bayswater Road is relatively well priced for a central Sydney hotel, and provides a noise barrier to the suburb from the perennial road traffic on New South Head Road.
