Rosebery is a large mixed-use suburb located six kilometres south of Sydney's Central Business District. Bordered mostly by Zetland, the prestigious Australian Golf Club, Mascot and Alexandria, the suburb has a mix of residential, commercial and industrial developments.
Rosebery was named after Archibald Phillip Primrose, the fifth Earl of Rosebery and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1894 to 1895. The Earl of Rosebery visited Australia for two months in the summer of 1884. In the early 20th century, Rosebery Racecourse operated in the suburb, competing in popularity with the nearby Royal Randwick Racecourse. The 1960s saw Rosebery develop into a semi-industrial area.
Rosebery is known as a 'garden suburb', with garden competitions having been held up until the 1990s. Its houses are mostly single-storey California Bungalows and Federation Bungalows, and serve as a nostalgic nod to the 'Australian Dream'. The Australian Golf Club - one of Australia's most exclusive, and host to many Australian Opens, lies on Rosebery's eastern border and is accessible via Trevilyan Avenue.
