Redfern is an inner-city suburb located three kilometres south of Sydney's Central Business District. The area is currently experiencing a process of gentrification after decades of being considered one of Sydney's rougher suburbs. Redfern's centrality and close proximity to the CBD makes it an ideal up and coming place to live.
The suburb is named after William Redfern, a surgeon who was granted land in the area by Lachlan Macquarie in 1817. Predominantly a working-class area (although that is gradually changing), Redfern has always enjoyed a strong multicultural atmosphere. "The Block" was gradually purchased over a period of thirty years by the Aboriginal Housing Company to support Aboriginal-managed housing.
The heritage-listed Redfern Park sits in the centre of the suburb and neighbours the redeveloped Redfern Oval, which was home to the South Sydney Rabbitohs Rugby League Football Club until 1987. The Mounted Police Museum is located on Baptiste Street near Crown Street's bustling southern end.
