Pyrmont is an inner-city suburb two kilometres west of Sydney's Central Business District and part of the Darling Harbour region. Originally a vital part of Sydney's industrial waterfront, Pyrmont today is a densely populated residential and recreational suburb favoured for its centrality and expansive waterfront.
Pyrmont was historically an industrial waterfront suburb with tightly packed wharves, factories, shipbuilding yards and woolstores. The suburb contained a mineral spring and was subsequently named after a similar natural spring in Bad Pyrmont, close to Hanover, in Germany. Many of Sydney's magnificent colonial buildings were made of sandstone quarried at Pyrmont. In the early 20th century, Pyrmont was a working-class industrial and port community, with a population of 30,000 in 1900 (its population today is around 13,000). The area gradually became a slum after industries closed down, especially after WWII, and by 1990 its population had dropped to around 900. The area was rejuvenated and gentrified in the 1990s and is now an attractive place to live thanks to its harbourside location and close proximity to Sydney's CBD.
The Sydney Fish Market, on Blackwattle Bay, is found on Pyrmont's western side, while Jones Bay Wharf, next to Pirrama Park, has been redeveloped and now houses a range of upscale dining establishments such as Chuuka Asian Fusion restaurant. Sydney's casino The Star sits at Pyrmont Bay next to the Lyric Theatre and the area is also home to Google's Sydney headquarters on Darling Island.
