Potts Point is a small and densely populated inner-city suburb located three kilometres east of Sydney's Central Business District. One kilometre long, but only 200m wide, most of the suburb's harbour foreshore land is occupied by the Garden Island facility of the Royal Australian Navy. The majority of the Kings Cross locality sits within Potts Point, and the two names are often used interchangeably, with Potts Point usually referring to the suburb's less 'colourful' corners.
Potts Point is named after one of its first colonial inhabitants, Joseph Hyde Potts, who purchased harbourside land in an area formerly known as Woolloomooloo Hill, which he renamed Potts Point. Remnants of the handsome and prestigious homes, which once lined the suburb, can be found on Victoria Street and Macleay Street. Many of the suburb's streets, such as Orwell Street, are named after Potts Point stately homes, which have since been demolished or remodelled.
Macleay Street and Challis Avenue are well known for their fine dining establishments and artisanal stores including The Apollo, Grandiflora, Fratelli Paradiso and Becker Minty. The Butler, on Victoria Street, is the perfect place to enjoy a few cocktails while taking in the glorious vista over Sydney CBD. The rather steep Butler and McElhone stairs on Victoria Street connect Potts Point to neighbouring Woolloomooloo.
