Millers Point is an inner-city suburb based at the northwestern edge of Sydney's Central Business District. Wedged in between Darling Harbour and the Rocks, Millers Point is adjacent to the new Barangaroo precinct and is also home to the Sydney Observatory.
Like many Sydney suburbs, Millers Point is named after one of its first colonial inhabitants - in this case, Thomas Miller, a Sergeant who received a grant of land in the area from the Governor of New South Wales in 1814. The Sydney Observatory opened in Millers Point on Observatory Hill in 1858. Two pubs in the suburb claim to be Sydney's oldest: The Lord Nelson (built in 1836) and The Fortune of War (built circa 1830).
The newly developed Barangaroo Reserve is adjacent to Millers Point's northwestern border, with Walsh Bay and the Sydney Theatre Company located past the Reserve's eastern side. The Sydney Observatory is open to the public and may be entered at Upper Fort Street. The Sydney Harbour Bridge's southern carriageway descends into the eastern edge of Millers Point, providing a clear physical marker between the suburb and the neighbouring Circular Quay / Rocks precinct.
