McMahons Point is a harbourside suburb on the lower North Shore, located three kilometres north of Sydney's Central Business District. Thanks to its extensive harbour foreshore, its spectacular views directly over Sydney Harbour Bridge, and its close proximity to central Sydney, McMahons Point is one of Sydney's most exclusive residential localities.
McMahons Point is named after Michael McMahon, an early Irish free settler who based himself in the suburb and became the mayor of the borough of Victoria (later North Sydney) in 1890. Like many of Sydney's suburbs, McMahons Point was initially a predominantly working-class suburb before becoming the prestigious and much coveted suburb that it is today. In 1957, much of McMahons Point was set to be rezoned as waterfront industrial land, but architect Harry Seidler lobbied for the suburb to remain a residential one.
Harry Seidler's controversial Blues Point Tower is found on Blues Point Road. Next to the tower is Blues Point Reserve, a waterfront park that enjoys panoramic views over Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The majority of the suburb's pubs and restaurants are found on Blues Point Road, and Sawmillers Reserve, on the western foreshore, enjoys a pleasant vista out over Balls Head Bay.
