Double Bay is a residential and commercial harbourside suburb located four kilometres east of Sydney's Central Business District. As Sydney's de facto capital of high-end hair and beauty services (as well as luxury fashion and real estate), the suburb has colloquially been coined, in jest, "Double Pay".
The suburb takes its name from the harbourside bay it sits upon, which features two distinct geographical formations between Darling Point and Point Piper, marked by a miniature point in between. In the early 19th century, a cattle and lettuce farm was spread across most of the valley which constitutes the suburb today. Sculling champion Charles A. Messenger established one of Sydney's first boatsheds at Double Bay in the late 19th century - a favourable rowing location given its relatively calm and protected waters.
While best known for its many hair salons and cosmetic clinics, Double Bay also has a thriving nightlife centred around its chic wine bars, two flagship pubs (The Golden Sheaf and the Royal Oak Hotel) and the prestigious Intercontinental Double Bay. The suburb's Woolworths is the envy of many with its own walk-in cheese room, and the waterside 18 Footers RSL offers gorgeous views out across the bay. Seven Shillings Beach and Redleaf Pool may be accessed via Blackburn Gardens next to Woollahra Library on New South Head Road.
