Darling Point is a small harbourside suburb located in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, four kilometres east of Sydney's Central Business District. A waterfront peninsula suburb, similar to Point Piper, Darling Point is mostly residential and features some of the most prestigious and coveted real estate in Sydney.
Darling Point was originally known by local Aboriginal people as Eurambi, Yarranabbi, Yarrandabbi and Yaranabe - Today, Yarranabbe Road, which cuts through the suburb's western side, attests to this. The suburb is named after Elizabeth Darling, the wife of New South Wales Governor Ralph Darling. Notable residents have included Ita Buttrose, Tom Cruise, Rachel Griffiths, Nicole Kidman, Sandra Sully and Gough Whitlam.
Yarranabbe Park stretches across most of the suburb's western waterfront and is a popular viewing spot for the New Year's Eve harbour fireworks. The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia lies at the park's southern end. The more intimately sized and lush-landscaped McKell Park is located at Darling Point's northern tip and offers sweeping views over Sydney Harbour. Saint Mark's Anglican Church in Darling Point Road played host to Elton John's first wedding and was also the nuptial venue featured in Muriel's Wedding.
