About Coogee

Coogee is a large residential and recreational beachside suburb located in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, eight kilometres southeast of Sydney's Central Business District. Coogee Beach is approximately 400 metres long - just under half the size of Bondi Beach - and features a bustling commercial foreshore catering to the many visitors who flock to Coogee's shore on warmer days.

  • 8km Southeast of Sydney CBD, approximately 4km South of Bondi Beach
  • Bordered by: Clovelly (north); the Pacific Ocean (east); South Coogee (south); Maroubra, Randwick (west)
  • Postcode: 2034

Coogee is believed to derive its name from the Aboriginal word koojah, meaning smelly place - an unflattering reference to the smell of decaying seaweed that occasionally plagues the beach. Coogee was established as a village in 1838, and its first school was built in 1863 but later converted into the Coogee Bay Hotel in 1873. In the 1920s, the Coogee Pleasure Pier was erected - a large amusement pier containing a theatre, restaurant and ballroom, similar to those on the English seaside. Unfortunately though, the pier was no match for Coogee's rough surf, and was consequently demolished in 1934.

Points of Interest

The Coogee Bay Hotel and the Merivale-managed Coogee Pavilion are the flagship venues on the foreshore for wining and dining. Gordon's Bay, popular among surfers, is located at the northern end of the suburb's coastline and can be accessed from the coastal walkway connecting Coogee to neighbouring Clovelly. Wylie's Baths is a heritage-listed tidal swimming pool located at the southern Coogee Headland. The baths are directly in view of Wedding Cake Island, which is roughly 400 metres out to sea.
