Clovelly is a small beachside suburb in between Bronte and Coogee. It is located eight kilometres southeast of Sydney's Central Business District. Clovelly Beach sits at the end of a long and narrow bay, making it a favourite swimming spot for families with young children thanks to its relatively calm and protected waters.
The suburb was originally known as Little Coogee, but was formally changed to Clovelly in 1913. It is named after the village of Clovelly on the north Devon coast of England. Clovelly is unique in that it features rather expansive concrete foreshores, unlike other more naturalistic Sydney beaches. These artificial foreshores were created not only to make access to the water easier for patrons (the majority of the bay's shore is rock, not sand), but also to provide construction employment to hundreds of men during the Great Depression. Mediterranean-inspired foreshore or concrete slabs by the sea? The jury's still out on that one...
The Clovelly Surf Life Saving Club was one of the first surf lifesaving clubs in the world and was founded in 1906, it can be found on Clovelly Bay's southern foreshore. The Clovelly Hotel is a pleasant pub a stone's throw from the beach and the Clovelly Bowling Club enjoys panoramic views over the Pacific Ocean atop the headland bordering Waverley Cemetery.
