About Centennial Park

Enclosing almost all of its namesake park (save for a small corner on the eastern extremity), Centennial Park is mostly a recreational suburb, but also contains a slither of highly prized residential streets on its northwestern border, adjacent to the Entertainment Quarter. Centennial Parklands, which includes neighbouring Moore Park and Queens Park, are considered the 'green lungs' of Sydney's Eastern Suburbs.

  • 4km Southeast of Sydney CBD

History

The central ponds and swamps found where Centennial Park sits today, were the primary source for Sydney's water supply in the early 19th century. Eventually superseded by the Nepean water supply system in the 1880s, the area was fashioned as a large park and opened as Centennial Park in 1888.  Australia's first Prime Minister, Edmund Barton, was sworn into office in Centennial Park on Federation Day in January 1901.

Points of Interest

Centennial Park features a variety of landscapes catering to all tastes, from sprawling woodland lawns and expansive duck ponds to formal rose gardens and multi-purpose sporting fields. A modern pavilion now stands in the park's northeastern corner, where the swearing-in ceremony took place on Federation Day. And impressive displays of Federation and Arts and Crafts style architecture can be viewed among the handsome mansions that line Centennial Park's most prized residential streets: Lang Road and Martin Road.
