Camperdown is a densely populated inner western suburb located four kilometres southwest of Sydney's Central Business District. Camperdown is named after the Battle of Camperdown - a British naval victory against the Dutch in 1797. The suburb was established as an agricultural and residential district in the early 19th century. The University of Sydney was incorporated in 1850 and its magnificent Great Hall was opened in 1859. This glorious example of Gothic Revival architecture still stands proudly today, and along with the main quadrangle, remains the symbolic and geographical centre of the university.
