Bronte is a small residential and recreational beachside suburb located in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, seven kilometres east of Sydney's Central Business District. Originally known as Nelson Bay in the early 19th century, Bronte and its namesake beach derive their name from Bronte House - a heritage-listed gothic-revival estate built for settler Robert Lowe and completed in 1845. Lowe named his paradisiacal pied-à-terre in honour of Horatio Nelson, created Duke of Bronte by the King of Naples in 1799. Bronte House still stands today as a historic house and may be visited at 470 Bronte Road, Bronte - on the southern border of Bronte Gully.
