Broadway is an urban locality located on the southwestern border of Sydney's Central Business District. The area and its namesake road are commonly thought of as a suburb, but in reality, Broadway is a locality sitting within the suburbs of Ultimo and Chippendale. Its flagship 700m road is simply titled "Broadway", with no street suffix following.
First laid in 1794, Broadway was one of the first roads built in the colony of New South Wales. It was widened in 1906 when the Central Railway Station was built, and has always been one of the key entry thoroughfares into Sydney's CBD. Thanks to the immense foot and road traffic that passes through the area each day, Broadway was once a major retailing centre, with Grace Brothers' flagship store complex originally located where the Broadway Shopping Centre now stands.
Despite having experienced a period of gradual decline, Broadway today is the subject of an ambitious urban renewal project. Central Park Mall (opposite UTS) and Chippendale Green have revitalised the precinct, and the renowned White Rabbit Gallery is a stone's throw away. Also nearby is the restored Old Clare Hotel, which offers boutique five star accommodation, as well as a rooftop pool - very much so a hidden urban oasis.
