Bondi and its flagship beach are undeniably some of Australia's most well known locations. The greater Bondi area is made up of three suburbs: Bondi, Bondi Beach and North Bondi. Bondi is seven kilometres east of Sydney's Central Business District. From its iconic stretch of sand to its many trendy restaurants and bars, Bondi is a bustling bastion of Australian oceanside sun and fun.
Bondi's name is derived from the Aboriginal word boondi meaning water breaking over rocks. For close to a century, Bondi Beach was owned as a private plot of land, but in 1882 it was acquired by the Municipal Council, and rezoned as a public beach for all to enjoy. The first tramway to the beach was completed in 1884, and the first surf bathing sheds were opened in 1903. A working-class suburb for most of the 20th century; Bondi gradually transformed into a more gentrified and valuable enclave from the 1990s onwards. Of the two fatal shark attacks recorded at Bondi Beach, both occurred less than a month apart in 1929.
While best known for its approximately 1km long beach, Bondi is also home to an array of other well visited sites including: Bondi Icebergs Club; Sean's Panorama; The Beach Road Hotel; Ben Buckler Point; The Bondi Pavilion; The Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk; and more.
