Alexandria is a large mixed-use inner-city suburb located four kilometres south of Sydney's Central Business District. While always a largely industrial suburb, gradual gentrification over the last two decades has seen Alexandria develop into a trendy area with new apartment buildings and artisan dining establishments coexisting with warehouses and corporate parks.
The Parish of Alexandria was founded in 1835, deriving its name from the Battle of Alexandria - one of the British military victories over Napoleon in the early 19th century. By the early 1940s, Alexandria was the largest industrial precinct in Australia, with 550 manufacturing factories in service. The artificial Alexandra Canal (which still exists today) was created in the late 19th century to provide direct shipping access for freight and manufactured goods. The early 2000s saw the commencement of Alexandria's gentrification, with redeveloped residential and dining precincts having since been established, especially around Green Square.
The expansive Sydney Park on the western edge of Alexandria offers 42 hectares of open recreational space - a luxury in an area that is otherwise largely industrial. And in terms of wining and dining, Alexandria features a smattering of fashionable restaurants, bars and breweries. Some of the most popular establishments worth visiting include The Grounds of Alexandria, Mecca Alexandria, Rocks Brewing Co, Textbook Boulangerie Patisserie and Sonoma Cafe.
