About TOORAK

Alexandria is a large mixed-use inner-city suburb located four kilometres south of Sydney's Central Business District. While always a largely industrial suburb, gradual gentrification over the last two decades has seen Alexandria develop into a trendy area with new apartment buildings and artisan dining establishments coexisting with warehouses and corporate parks.

Location

  • Toorak is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 5 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Stonnington local government area. Toorak recorded a population of 12,817 at the 2021 census.
  • Postcode: 3142

Rich in history and culture, locals and tourists alike can relish stunning architecture with beautiful Tudor-style buildings, amongst the hilly, wide streets, canopied by longstanding, luscious trees.

The name Toorak has become synonymous with wealth and privilege, the suburb long having the reputation of being Melbourne's most elite, and ranking among the most prestigious in Australia.

History

The suburb is named after Toorak House, built for Melbourne merchant James Jackson on 108 acres (43 ha) he bought in 1849. After Jackson died at sea in 1850, the house was rented for Sir Charles Hotham, the first governor of Victoria, until Government House was completed, confirming the social status of the area.
